Brrr! Extreme Florida cold blast still can’t touch Midwest

Emergency management officials warned that Monday night was expected to be the coldest night of this winter season, and record-low temperatures were expected to be broken in north Florida.

But it’s nothing compared to what the rest of the country is facing.

The forecast is extreme: Wind chills were expected to drop as low as minus-55 Monday night in International Falls, Minn., and rebound to minus-25 to minus-35 on Tuesday. Farther south, the wind chill is expected to hit minus-50 in Chicago and minus-35 in Detroit.

Officials in Chicago, St. Louis and Milwaukee warned residents to stay indoors and avoid the frigid cold altogether.

“It’s just a dangerous cold,” said National Weather Service meteorologist Butch Dye in Missouri.

It hasn’t been this cold for almost two decades in many parts of the country. Frostbite and hypothermia can set in quickly at 15 to 30 below zero.
