Heat of the moment: Tampa sets record high today with 95 degrees

TAMPA — Congratulations, Tampanians (and a couple of you Tampans, too) because you all set a record on Thursday.

The city had a record high of 95 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

That exceeded the old high of 94 degrees by just one degree. The old high was reached on this same day in 1974, 1991 and 2017.

Thank dry weather for the record high. The constant September rains had managed to cool temperatures by just a few degrees everyday. But Thursday saw a lack of rain in part because of light winds, which meant there was no strong sea breeze coming in to kick-start any afternoon showers.

"Had the rain moved in a little earlier we probably would not have set that record," said meteorologist Tony Hurt.

The weather will return to its usual hot-then-wet pattern on Friday and through the weekend. Expect partly-cloudy skies following by afternoon thundershowers in the afternoon, according to the weather service. Highs will be in the low 90s.

Afternoon thunderstorms are also on tap for the weekend. There will be a 50 percent chance of storms on Saturday and that will rise to 60 percent on Sunday.
