Local craft beer of the week: Munich Dunkel Lager, Dissent Craft Brewing

St. Petersburg's Dissent Craft Brewing Company has entered full autumn mode.

The lineup of deliciously festive brews on tap ranges from a sour ale flavored with crème brulee tea to a pumpkin and maple harvest ale. There's also the brewery's first bottle release: a bourbon barrel-aged vanilla imperial cream ale.

The best of the bunch, however, is also the most traditional. Dissent's take on the classic dunkel (German: "dark") lager is a robust, malt-forward take on the Munich style, a year-round beer that just happens to fit right into a flight of fall brews.

This Munich dunkel pours a copper-brown with a quickly-dissipating head. The low carbonation adds to the high drinkability - this is an easy-drinking lager, despite any preconceived notions one may have regarding "dark beer."

The nose contains mild hints of cocoa, but overall, this is a Munich malt showcase: a light bready quality, with a mild roast in the background. The flavor is, again, malt-driven, but it's not sweet or rich. The beer is clean, balanced and perfect for a cool November evening.

Stop by Dissent's tasting room at 5518 Haines Road N to try Munich Dunkel on draft. While you're there, be sure to sample some of the other fall-friendly brews while the weather is still cooperating.
