New Year’s resolutions for living your best life in Tampa Bay

Happy January! It’s a new year, and as such, we’re vowing to make the most of the rich, interesting place where we live. People from all over the world come to Tampa Bay to vacation. Every year, it’s good to take stock of why. Tourists have done things in our towns that folks who have lived here for 40 years have not.

So, what do you want to do this year? We can help you get started. The Tampa Bay Times features staff gathered our own new year’s resolutions for living in Tampa Bay:

• Try a bike share/ferry/trolley/alternate mode of transportation.

• Eat at restaurants off the beaten path.

• Explore unspoiled places you can get to by boat, like Egmont Key and Caladesi Island.

• Give a new lunch spot a shake.

• Take the long way to work.

• Experience nature at Boyd Hill and Weedon Island preserves in St. Petersburg or Hillsborough River State Park in Thonotosassa.

• Wear sunscreen more often.

• Go to a museum you’ve never been to.

• Visit local farms, like Sweetwater Organic Farm in Tampa, and get tips to start your own garden.

• Take a cooking class at Sur La Table or Publix Aprons in Tampa.

• Take a smartphone photography class at the Florida Museum of Photographic Arts in Tampa.

• See a work of local professional or community theater.

• Ride as far down the Pinellas Trail as possible (but have a plan to get back).

• Hit another trail on foot, like Fort De Soto in St. Petersburg or Flatwoods Park in Thonotosassa.

• Try an escape room with friends. Better yet, try an escape room with foes.

• Dress in cosplay for Tampa Bay Comic Con.

• Read a book by a Florida author like Tim Dorsey, Michael Connelly, Carl Hiaasen or Zora Neale Hurston.

• Ride the scariest roller coaster at Busch Gardens.

• Join a meetup group and meet new people.

• Volunteer with a local charity, school or hospital, and do it more than once.

• Introduce yourself to the people you jog next to at the gym or on Bayshore Boulevard every week.

• Experience a Florida Orchestra concert.

• Do those things people come to Florida to do. Go to Disney World. Parasail. Paddleboard. Spot dolphins. Eat ice cream. Fall asleep on the beach.

• Watch the sunrise. Watch the sunset.
