Tampa Bay Rays

Price sole Rays All-Star representative

DETROIT -- Turns out, David Price will pitch for another team this year – the American League All-Star team.

Price was named to his fourth All-Star Game on Sunday, tying Carl Crawford's team record most All-Star Game selections. The game is July 15 at Target Field in Minnesota.

Price is the lone All-Star from the Tampa Bay Rays. Reliever Jake McGee, despite being one of the most dominant late-inning relievers, did not make the team.

“Look at what (McGee has) done, he's been virtually unhittable this year,” Rays manager Joe Maddon said.

Price, meanwhile, despite a 7-7 record and a 3.50 ERA, maintains he is pitching better than he has at any point of his career. He has 63 strikeouts in his last six games.

“It's always extra-special to be selected by the players,” Price said before facing the Detroit Tigers on Sunday night. “It hasn't been a typical year. I'm leading the league in a couple of categories, but one I'm not particularly proud of. I've never been a guy to give up a bunch of home runs. I've got to do a better job of keeping it in the park and stay away from giving up those crooked numbers. If I could take away four or five innings from this season, I feel like I would be close to putting up some pretty special numbers.”

Price entered Sunday's game with a major league-leading 153 strikeouts. He is on pace to strike out 275 batters this season, which will make him only the second pitcher in the last 10 years to reach that total. Yu Darvish of the Rangers struck out 277 last season.

Price has allowed an American League-high 17 home runs.

McGee has not allowed a run in his last 13 appearances spanning 11 2/3 innings. His 1.17 ERA prior to Sunday's game was the lowest among American League relievers.

“Jake, hopefully if something were to occur over the course next week that he gets strong consideration because I believe he's definitely an All-Star this year,” Maddon said. “But having said that, I understand how difficult it is for the manager to do this.”

Price has been able to pitch at such a high level despite the constant presence of trade rumors.

“That tells you how he's able to block things out, which I think, really, the better ones do,” Maddon said.

Price said he's excited to be part of the last All-Star Game for Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter. He's also glad the game will be played at Target Field.

“I love Target Field,” Price said.

Price is also thrilled the Rays begin the second half of the season against the Twins in Minneapolis.

“I've always been envious of the guys who have been in that position where their teams are playing in the All-Star city,” he said. “It will be nice just to hang out there for a couple of days.
