Florida Gators’ defensive swarm, Miami cashing in on turnovers and more state nuggets

Florida's flying D

The Gators' swarming defense has been the biggest reason for its Year 1 turnaround under coach Dan Mullen. Four players — LB Vosean Joseph, DL Jachai Polite, DE Jabari Zuniga and DB Chauncey Gardner-Johnson — have at least six tackles for a loss. No other SEC team has more than two. Except more stuffed plays today against Vanderbilt, which has allowed 33 tackles for a loss.

Off the turnover chain

A year after Miami's turnover chain made its debut, the No. 16 Hurricanes have learned how to cash in on its appearances. Miami scored only 72 points off its 31 turnovers last season. This year, the 'Canes have 69 points off 14 turnovers, including 14 in last week's comeback win over Florida State. This week's opponent, Virginia, has lost six turnovers over its last three games.

Upset watch for UCF?

Memphis is built like a team that could threaten No. 10 UCF's 18-game winning streak. Tigers RB Darrell Henderson leads the nation with 11.02 yards per rush and eight carries of at least 40 yards. UCF's run defense has been susceptible to big plays (No. 89 in 10-yard rushes allowed) and slower drips (No. 66 in yards per rush allowed). Add in a road environment and national telecast, and the Knights will have their biggest challenge so far.

"I particularly don't like going against friends. One guy's got to win. One guy's got to lose." – Texas A&M coach Jimbo Fisher on facing friends, like this week's opposing coach, South Carolina's Will Muschamp. Fisher was 3-1 at FSU against Muschamp's Gators

"We're going to run a double-reverse, hand-off, kneel-down flea-flicker, and we're going to run it on the seventh play of the game." – Gators coach Dan Mullen, telegraphing his next trick play

"He always has something up his sleeve. We have to have something up our sleeve, as well." – Vanderbilt coach Derek Mason, responding to Mullen's trickery

By the numbers

41 – Consecutive games with a catch for Temple WR Ventell Bryant (Jefferson High). That's tied with Fresno State's KeeSean Johnson for the nation's longest active streak

18-0 – USC's home record under coach Clay Helton

16-15-1 – Michigan State's all-time record against Penn State in their battle for the Land Grant Trophy

0 – Times Nebraska has started 0-6, which it would do with a loss at Northwestern

35 – Tackles for Eastern Michigan LB Jaylen Pickett (Zephyrhills High)
