The Belleair Beach Causeway has reopened after a crash this morning caused by a wrong-way driver injured four people and closed the bridge to traffic in both directions, deputies said.
Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office Corp. Kannika Nimithkoune was traveling east on the causeway at 6:55 a.m. when she saw a Chevrolet Tahoe coming at her in the wrong lane, according to a release from the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office.
Nimithkoune swerved to avoid the Tahoe but was struck on the back driver’s side of her marked Crown Victoria.
The Tahoe then hit a concrete wall and traveled northwest where it hit the front driver’s side of a Ford van that was traveling east on the causeway, deputies said.
The van rotated and hit the front of a Dodge truck.
The Tahoe struck another concrete wall before coming to a rest in the westbound lane, deputies said.
The Tahoe’s driver Mark Hindes, 33, was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver and a passenger in the Dodge truck and the driver of the Ford van were also hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
Nimithkoune was not injured.
Deputies continue to investigate.
