Police: Teen, 17, shoots Pinellas Park man who confronted him after car break-in

PINELLAS PARK — A Pinellas Park teen faces a charge of attempted murder after police say he stole a gun from an unlocked vehicle and shot the owner as he tried to give chase.

Police say Brandon Paul Roman, 17, faces charges including attempted murder, aggravated assault with a firearm, and violation of probation for a previous charge of grand theft of a motor vehicle.

Roman was looking for unlocked vehicles to burglarize near 62nd Street and 106th Avenue N early Sunday morning, police said, when he located a gun from an unlocked vehicle.

HOT WHEELS: Kids are driving Pinellas County’s car-theft epidemic. It’s a dangerous — sometimes deadly — game.

A short time later, Alexander Weaver, 28, was at his home on the 6200 block of 106th Avenue N around 1:15 a.m. when he saw someone at least three people breaking into his vehicle, police said.

He chased one of them — later identified as Roman — about a block to Oakhaven Drive, where Roman pulled out the gun and shot Weaver, who suffered an arm wound.

Police continue to search for the other suspects.

The investigation continues.
