Deputies: Man broke into house, set it on fire and stole their dog

SEMINOLE — A Seminole man was arrested on allegations that he burglarized a home, set it on fire and stole the homeowner’s dog, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office. Austin Lang, 19, now faces numerous charges of burglary, arson and possession of a controlled substance.

The incident took place about 10:45 a.m. Tuesday. Surveillance video shows a man knocking on the front door at 8350 Flamevine Ave., then going around to the rear, deputies said. About an hour later, deputies said, the video showed a man walking down the driveway carrying bags and suitcases.

The homeowner, Lance Klipper, 52, arrived home from work about 2:40 p.m. and called deputies after discovering that his home had been broken into and that a fire had been set inside. The fire caused minor damage but no injuries.

After the fire was put out, deputies said they learned the home had been ransacked and items were stolen, and the family dog, Bailey, was missing.

Bailey was later found unharmed nearby. Deputies said they later identified Lang, who lives about a three-minute walk away at 8428 Gerbera Ave., as the man seen in the surveillance video.

He was arrested Wednesday night, deputies said, after he admitted he broke into the home and set it on fire. Items from other burglaries were also found in Lang’s home, the Sheriff’s Office said. Lang was being held Thursday at the Pinellas County Jail in lieu of $92,000 bail.
