Clearwater police search for ‘Bic Bandit’ accused of stealing lighters

CLEARWATER — Police detectives are searching for a man coined the "Bic Bandit" based on reports that he’s stolen dozens of lighters from the same 7-Eleven.

According to Clearwater police, the man has swiped the lighters four times in the last month, the most recent heist on Tuesday, from the convenience store at 657 Court St.

It goes down like this: the man walks into the store, hangs out for a minute, then grabs a display of lighters and runs out the door. On one occasion, police believe he stole up to 50 lighters.

Once he was seen getting on a red bicycle after he fled the store. Another time he ran away. He was described as a black man, about 6-foot-1 and lanky with a bald head.
