TAMPA — The Tampa Police Department is looking for information about a driver and passenger involved in a hit-and-run accident Saturday afternoon. A man was hit by a white Honda Civic at about 12:25 p.m. Saturday in the 4000 block of W Hillsborough Avenue. Felix De la Uz, 81, died at the scene, according to police.
According to witnesses, police said, the driver is a white or Hispanic male about 5 feet 4 inches tall wearing a white tank top, dark shorts and dark shoes. The passenger is a white female, also about 5 feet 4 inches tall, with blonde hair, a green shirt and jeans.
The vehicle was heading west on Hillsborough Avenue when it ran off the road and hit a sign and an electrical box, as well as De la Uz.
"Witnesses also state that prior to being hit, De la Uz pushed his wife, Narda Vazquez Ruiz, 70, out of the way of the oncoming vehicle, sacrificing his safety for hers," a police report said.
After hitting the man, the driver stopped the car about 500 feet later and "fled the scene on foot," the report said. The area was closed for several hours while police investigated.
Police urge anyone with information about the incident to contact Crime Stoppers of Tampa Bay at 1-800-837-TIPS or submit a tip online at tinyurl.com/ydc8feh8.
