DOVER — With the start of classes nearly three weeks away, Hillsborough County school resource officers are receiving extensive active shooter training Tuesday morning to prepare them in the event of another school tragedy.
Members of the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team, bomb squad, K-9 and aerial units are at Strawberry Crest High School, 4691 Gallagher Road, for the training, which will simulate a worst-case instance similar to the Feb. 14 massacre on Marjory Stoneman Douglas High school, in which 17 were killed.
Motorists along Interstate 4 can expect to see crews on hand, and helicopters landing throughout the afternoon as the SROs prepare for the Aug. 10 start of school. The training also includes live paint rounds being shot inside the school.
The officers are being trained after the Florida Legislature passed a school security bill that provides for armed protection for all students.
