Rays stadium backers sponsor free screening of ‘Field of Dreams’ at Tampa Theatre

TAMPA — It would take hundreds of millions of dollars to build a new stadium for the Tampa Bay Rays, and more than a few dreams, too.

So a business group advocating for a stadium in Ybor City is joining with the Tampa Theatre for a free screening of the 1989 film Field of Dreams 7 p.m. Monday, April 23.

The price of admission, says Tampa Bay Rays 2020, is an electronic signature on a petition at the group’s web page tampabayrays2020.com/TT/. The only message there: "Join the team. Keep the Rays in Tampa Bay!"

Clicking the "Sign the Petition" tab produces the response, "Thanks for joining the team. No tickets necessary, seating is first come, first serve. See you April 23rd at the Tampa Theatre!"

Before the show, starting at 6 p.m., those who attend can hang out with Rays’ mascots Raymond and DJ Kitty and get into the spirit with a Take Me Out to The Ball Game sing-along accompanied by the Tampa Theatre’s Wurlitzer organ.

Field of Dreams, starring Kevin Costner and James Earl Jones, is the fantasy story of a man’s campaign to build a baseball field in a field of Iowa corn, inspired by a mysterious voice whose message became a real-life mantra of positive-thinking: "If you build it, they will come."
