The Plant City Pig Jam celebrated its 15th anniversary Friday and Saturday with live entertainment and dozens of groups competing to make the best barbecue in the South.

The event, sponsored by Suncoast Credit Union, featured an amateur and a professional division with prizes among the top 10 teams for barbecue ribs, barbecue pork, beef brisket and chicken. There were also prizes for best dessert and best sauce.

Hot Wachula's was the Reserve Grand Champion, taking home a check for $2,000. Shig Ninja was the Grand Champion, with two perfect scores, and took home a check for $3,000.

The Professional Barbecue Competitors competition was sponsored by Poppell Insurance Inc. & Auto Owners Insurance with first place going to Shig Ninja BBQ and second place going to Hot Wachula's. Gordon Food Services was the Amateur BBQ competition sponsor and first place went to Sons of Hamarchy and second place went to Smokin' Ain't Easy.

The event was a Kansas City Barbecue Society sanctioned competition and only one team received a perfect score. Shig Ninja BBQ, from Chandler, Ariz., received two perfect 180 scores in pork and brisket and was awarded Grand Champion.

Teams traveled from Italy, Arizona and Georgia to compete against local grillers.

This was the 15th annual event. The Plant City Chamber of Commerce estimated that more than 10,000 people attended.
