Student walkout under way with remembrances of Parkland victims

The national school walkout is taking place this morning across the nation and at a number of schools in the Tampa Bay area.

At Clearwater High, principal Keith Mastorides estimated that about 60 percent of the school’s 2,000 students walked out. Students gathered in the stands at the school’s stadium. A bell rang 17 times, once for each of the victims of the Feb. 14 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland.

The school chorus performed the song "One Voice."

At Gibbs High in St. Petersburg, hundreds of students, many of them holding hands, gathered in the school’s large quadrangle as principal Reuben Hepburn recited the names of the Parkland victims and read brief biographies of each one.

Times reporters and photographers are at other schools this morning.
