Deputy foils suicide attempt at Hernando detention center

BROOKSVILLE - While conducting rounds at the Hernando County Detention Center booking area Sunday night, Detention Deputy Ivan Rosario approached a holding cell where he observed a woman inmate who had taken her inmate-issued sports bra, and tied it around her neck. Rosario called for assistance and went into the cell, according to a release from Hernando County Sheriff's Office, where Rosario placed his right hand between the inmate's neck and the sports bra in an effort to keep her from tightening it any further. Deputy Rosario proceeded to remove the sports bra from the inmate's neck and to escort her from the holding cell. "This incident was caught early and, by all accounts, was a relatively minor incident," Sheriff Al Nienhuis said. "This inmate came through it unharmed because, and only because, Deputy Rosario was attentive to his duties."
The inmate was evaluated by medical staff, and was determined to be not injured during the suicide attempt. The inmate was seen by a contract psychiatrist with the Hernando County Detention Center, and cleared to be placed in general population. [email protected] (352) 544-5271
