Holy Hog brings BBQ brand to Brandon

BRANDON -Brandon folks who make the daily commute to Tampa probably have dined at a Holy Hog in downtown, West Tampa or South Tampa. Maybe they have even made it up to Carrollwood location.

Now Danny Hernandez's famed barbecue spot has a new home on Bloomingdale Avenue.

Jimmy Mayberrie, Holy Hog's director of franchise operations, calls the location in the Bloomingdale Plaza anchored by Winn-Dixie the first franchise in the chain.

"There's no other barbecue on Bloomingdale between U.S. 301 and Lithia-Pinecrest Road," Mayberrie said. "

Diners will find the some staples that have helped Holy Hog rise into a Tampa favorite: Texas-style brisket, sausage (smoked summer and spicy beef), St. Louis ribs and sides that include the award-winning jalaepno mac and cheese, a victor at Tampa's Mac and Cheese Throwdown.

Holy Hog also boasts about burnt ends, candied brisket points that are a favorite of Times food critic Laura Reiley. Fried okra, collard greens, corn fritters and cole slaw.

Desserts include warm apple crisp and banana pudding.

The space may not be as big as the Holy Hog on Armenia, but it seats more than 20.

The newest Holy Hog went through a soft opening for families and friends the weekend of Nov. 3 and 4. It's up and running now, and plans a grand opening this weekend.

Holy Hog at 127 E Bloomingdale Ave. is open every day from 11 a.m. t o 9 p.m. For more information visit holyhogbbq.com.
