Volunteers needed to create oyster reef

RIVERVIEW - Tampa Bay Watch is seeking volunteers to create an oyster shell bar on the shoreline of Schultz Nature Preserve on the mornings of Oct.11 and 12. Building an oyster reef isn't easy. After a six- to eight-month permit process, Tampa Bay Watch and an anticipated 80 volunteers will shovel approximately 20 tons of fossilized oyster shells into mesh bags, and then transport each bag by outboard motorboat and place it on the shoreline of the island. This shoreline and the surrounding preserve is home to colonial bird species. In addition to helping hands, volunteers with shallow draft boats are also sought to assist in transporting bags of oyster shells from Williams Park Boat Ramp to Schultz Nature Preserve. Call Rachel Arndt at (727) 867-8166, ext. 233, to volunteer.
