Marc Topkin’s takeaways from Thursday’s Rays-Blue Jays game

As if the Rays haven't been innovative enough — with relievers starting and starters relieving, with pitchers playing infield spots and infielders playing the outfield — Thursday they unveiled a four-man outfield.

Thursday was another example of good Yonny Chirinos. The occasionally inconsistent rookie right-hander was in good form, allowing just one hit and one walk over 4 2/3 innings, a performance that allowed the Rays to get back in the game.

Kevin Cash continues to manage aggressively, taking advantage of the defensive versatility of his players and the depth of his September roster to use three pinch-hitters over a four-batter sequence in the sixth inning.
