Tampa Bay Rays

Marc Topkin’s takeaways from Thursday’s Rays-Red Sox game

Home cooking clearly agrees with OF Denard Span. The 34-year-old Tampa product continues to deliver, producing at the plate, running the bases, making diving catches in the outfield, and Thursday, even going over the short sidewall twice in hot pursuit.

SS Willy Adames showed during his three-day cameo callup that he can play in the majors, making all kinds of good impressions. But baseball is a business, too, and the Rays aren't alone — like it or not — in managing the service time of their prospects to maximize production.

LHP Blake Snell was sharp from the start against the Red Sox, mixing his blazing fastball and sharp breaking ball. His only regret should be his lack of efficiency, a fifth-inning lapse leading to him throwing 101 pitches. With stuff that good, he should be able to work more than six innings.
