OF Johnny Field unexpectedly made it the final cut of spring training before being sent back to Triple-A.
Just over two weeks later, he will make it to the big leagues for the first time.
The Rays announced after Wednesday's game that Field, 26, would be called up on Friday.
Reliever RHP Ryan Weber, the St. Petersburg native called up earlier in the week to add a 10th arm to the bullpen, was optioned back to Durham.
Field spent all of 2017 and half of 2016 with Durham. In four games this year, he was 5-for-14.
A strong spring and the Rays need for a right-handed hitting outfielder pushed him into contention for the final spot (along with Brandon Snyder).
But the Rays instead opted to go outside and instead acquired Rob Refsnyder – Field's college teammate at Arizona and good-enough friend that Field was in his wedding.
To add Field, the Rays will have to make room on the 40-man roster. That move is expected to be announced Friday.
