Rays add control freak Evan Scribner to bullpen mix on minor-league deal

The Rays are adding another veteran reliever to their spring roster, signing RHP Evan Scribner to a minor-league deal.

Scribner pitched in just 20 big-league games (21 1/3 innings) the past two seasons for Seattle, sidelined by arm injuries. That was after a 2015 season in Oakland when he pitched in 54 games, posting a 2-2, 4.35 record.

Overall, Scribner has pitched in the majors over parts of six seasons, making his debut for the Padres in 2012,  logging 169 innings.

And when he is on the mound, he has an impressive ability to throw the ball over the plate. As pointed out by mlbtraderumors.com, over Scribner's last  93 major-league innings, going back to 2014, he has faced 368 batters and issued just five non-intentional walks (and one intentional).

His mark of 0.58 walks per nine innings is by far the best in majors among pitchers who logged at least 90 innings over those four seasons. Cleveland's Josh Tomlin is next at 1.04. Over that span, Scribner also ranks first with a 73.1 first pitch strike rate.

Here is a look at relief candidates currently on the Rays 65-man spring roster, with the possibility that some starters also could be switched to relief duty, and  also that closer Alex Colome could be traded, with the Cardinals remaining a possibility:
