Diana C. Nearhos’ takeaways from Thursday’s Lightning-Red Wings game

Steven Stamkos scored his first goal of the season in the second period. Entering the game, he wasn't alone among the league's top players to be goal-less. Last season's league MVP, the Devils' Taylor Hall, didn't get his first until Thursday night. And Sidney Crosby is still looking for his first.

The Red Wings remain winless this season (0-5-2), and it figures to be a long year in Detroit. That's not surprising, though. The Red Wings are due for a rebuild after making the playoffs every season from 1990-2016.

There have been plenty of rumors that Lightning senior adviser and former GM Steve Yzerman will end up with the Red Wings next year. The former Wings great didn't feed into those rumors Thursday. He was not at Amalie Arena for the game. That's not unusual. Yzerman is often out of town on hockey business.
