Update: Two students arrested after gun found near Lakewood High

Two Lakewood High students arrested Monday now face felony weapons charges after the school was placed on lockdown following reports of a weapon on campus.

The 16-year-olds will be charged with possession of a weapon on a school campus and aggravated assault. St. Petersburg Police spokeswoman Samantha Williams said one of the boys arrested was in a Snapchat video standing in front of lockers and wielding a handgun, pointing it at the camera.

The location of the video was tagged at the school, which led students to alert the school resource officer Monday morning.

Lakewood High, located at 1400 54th Ave S in St. Petersburg, was placed on lockdown after police received a report of a weapon on campus at 9:37 a.m. Police responded to the scene and learned of a group of students who had left campus. A gun was found in a backpack near the school.

In a message sent to families, principal Erin Savage asked for the school community's help to prevent future incidents.

"I want to remind our school community that weapons are not tolerated on Lakewood's campus," she said. "We appreciate any time a student, parent or community member comes forward with information on potentially dangerous situations. Please help us in preventing weapons from coming onto our campus."
