Bucs’ Carlton Davis admonished, consoled by veteran teammates while mic’ed up

Rookie cornerback Carlton Davis was mic'ed up during the Bucs' loss to the Panthers Sunday in Charlotte, N.C.

More interesting than anything Davis had to say was what he heard from a few of his veteran teammates.

Davis, who did not have one of his better games, was both admonished and consoled after being involved in some of the game's more pivotal plays.

The second-round pick was flagged for taunting after getting up in the face of Panthers wide receiver Devin Funchess and screaming, "Let's go! Let's go now!" after a fourth-down tackle late in the third quarter.

Since it was a post-possession penalty, the Bucs still got the ball. But it set them back 15 yards.

Davis is first approached by defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul, who pats him on the chest and says, "Can't do that."

Linebacker Lavonte David walks up to Davis from behind and grabs him by the shoulder.

"Be smart," David tells him. "Be smart. You can't let that (stuff) get to you. Be smart. Just play good football, and get off the field, all right?"

Davis later screams in frustration after being beaten by Panthers wide receiver Curtis Samuel on a 19-yard touchdown pass that gave Carolina a 42-28 lead in the fourth quarter.

Cornerback Brent Grimes immediately walks up to Davis and taps him on the shoulder.

"Hey, keep your head up," Grimes says. "Keep your head up."

Grimes goes back to Davis on the sideline, where the rookie is seated with his head down.

"You learnin', you learnin', bro," Grimes says, slapping him on the shoulder. "It's all right."
