A man who suffered from diabetes is dead after apparently having a medical issue while driving, Tampa police said.

At 4:35 p.m. police received a report of a reckless driver on Central Avenue in Seminole Heights. As the officer arrived, the driver swerved into oncoming traffic and hit two cars near the intersection with Idlewild Avenue. No one was injured in the crashes, police said.

The driver, Arthur Green Jr., 63, 3406 Avon St., became combative with the police officer, who then called for help, police said. A second officer arrived and helped handcuff the driver.

Based on Green’s behavior, however, the officers became concerned that he may be suffering a diabetic incident. At that point, he stopped breathing, police said.

The officers uncuffed Green and began CPR. Tampa Fire Rescue arrived and successfully revived Green, who was transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital where he later died, police said.

Police said initial medical reports indicate Green suffered from severe hypoglycemia. Tampa Fire Rescue reported it had responded to his home on Friday and Feb. 17 for diabetes-related incidents.
