Rays Triple Play: Giving ‘til it hurts

Published: March 23, 2014

The Rays raised $50,000 on Friday night at the sixth annual BaseBALL Dinner and Auction in Punta Gorda to benefit the Boys and Girls Clubs of Charlotte County. Rays manager Joe Maddon and his coaches auctioned off their “Batman” T-shirts for $50. Maddon even gave up his beloved fake leather sport coat for the cause.

“Which I totally did not want to depart with, but this guy offered $200,” Maddon said. “I would have felt absolutely horrible if I didn’t sell the jacket. I’ll never find another one like it, but that’s how it goes.”

Lucky 15

The Rays are one win shy of their 15th win this spring, and you know what happens when the Rays win 15 Grapefruit League games — they follow that with a playoff season. The Rays won at least 15 spring games in 2008, 2010, 2011 and 2013.

Long time coming

Friday’s 5-0 loss to the Blue Jays was the first time the Rays were shut out at Charlotte Sports Park since Feb. 25, 2009, when they opened their first spring training in Port Charlotte. They scored at least once in their next 88 games at CSP.
