RIVERVIEW — The installation of 148 new fire hydrants in Riverview and Brandon is underway.

The project, overseen by Hillsborough’s Public Utilities Department, is part of the Countywide Fire Protection Program. The program’s goal is to improve fire protection in older neighborhoods that, according to current development codes, don’t have enough fire hydrants.

“These older areas don’t have hydrants within 500 feet of each other, which is the maximum residential standard,” said Mark Dillman, project manager.

As a result, work began in June to update the Alafia River Ridge area in Riverview, where 56 hydrants will be installed along Valrie Lane north of McMullen Loop, as well as Monette, Potts and Winn roads. About 3.5 miles of 6-inch, 8-inch and 12-inch water pipleline will also be installed to support the new hydrants.

In Brandon, 92 hydrants will be added along Bryan and Bama roads. Work, which began in September, will take place east of John Moore Road, north of Bracken Lane, west of Bell Shoals Road, and south of Lumsden Road. Additionally, more than four miles of 6-inch water pipeline will be installed to support the hydrants.

Dillman said each of these areas already had working hydrants, but they simply weren’t close enough to each other to satisfy the residential development codes.

The work in each area is estimated to cost $1.8 million and is being funded by Public Utilities’ Fire Protection Improvement Master Program. The work in Riverview is scheduled to be done in January, while the installations in Brandon are slated to be completed in mid-2014.
