Fred McGriff’s son arrested after puppy left in car

Former Major League Baseball slugger Fred McGriff’s 22-year-old son was arrested Sunday after leaving a pit bull in a car while he went to see a movie, authorities say.Erick McGriff, 22, was arrested on a charge of animal cruelty. He was released from the Pinellas County Jail after posting $150 bail.Clearwater police received several reports of a puppy locked in a car outside the Varsity Club Sports Café at 24091 U.S. 19 at roughly 5:30 p.m., said Clearwater public safety spokeswoman Elizabeth Watts. All the windows in the car were rolled up.A patrol officer tried to locate the owner by going to several businesses at the address, Watts said. He couldn’t find the owner, so he smashed the window to rescue the puppy, Watts said. McGriff showed up at 6:35 p.m., after he returned from seeing a 4:15 p.m. movie.Animal control workers with Pinellas County Animal Services took custody of the puppy, whose name is Titan.
