Sandelin Dedicates Title To Coach
Published: May 10, 2007
While most of her mind was concentrating on winning, Lucy Sandelin had to be thinking about her longtime bowling coach during her climb to the top in the USBC Senior Queens last week in Huntersville, N.C.
Sandelin, coming out of the contender's bracket after losing her second match, won six straight, then beat unbeaten Virginia Norton in the finals twice.
"I was so excited about winning," Sandelin said, "but what made it even better was I dedicated this victory to my coach, Dee Alvarez."
Alvarez, who coached Sandelin in 1976 when she won the World Cup as Lucy Giovinco, has been suffering with cancer for several years and was undergoing chemotherapy during Sandelin's first senior tournament.
Sandelin qualified for the seniors when she turned 50 on March 15.
After scoring the first of two 700s in her opening match, Sandelin lost her second match. She then blew past Doris Nettleman of Michigan, 704-482; Christine Drew of California, 577-542; Bessie Walker of North Carolina, 578-531; Cathy Smith of Virginia, 540-495; Melody Felton of Iowa, 582-520; and Roseanne Allen of Texas, 582-581 after being down by 31 pins in the final game.
She then beat Norton, 680-563 and 645-546.
