Next SAR meeting Eagle Scout Program subject at next SAR meeting

Doug Brown, chairman of the Sons of the American Revolution Eagle Scout Committee, will be the guest speaker at the Sept. 6 luncheon meeting of the South Shore Sons of the American Revolution to be held at Freedom Plaza at noon. He will talk about scouting in relation to the other SAR programs designed to honor and encourage young men in their quest to earn the designation Eagle Scout from the Boy Scouts, and emphasize the SAR ideals of patriotism and citizenship. Brown has served as district advancement chairman in four Scout Councils. He is the recipient of the Unit Leader Award, Silver Beaver Award, Daniel Beard Masonic Scout Award and District Award of Merit. He has an associate’s degree in electrical engineering from Penn State University and retired from the Navy Seabees after serving 33 years in the reserves. Share your knowledge of Medicare

Learn how to be a Senior Medicare Patrol volunteer in your community. SMP volunteers offer information to seniors on how to protect themselves from Medicare fraud through outreach at community health fairs, senior fairs, expos and/or group presentations. Learn all about Medicare

Sun Towers, 101 Trinity Lakes Drive, will host a meeting at 1:30 p.m. on Sept. 18 on Medicare Preventive Services. It will give an overview of the low- or no-cost screenings now available to original Medicare and Medicare Advantage beneficiaries. Another topic will be Bridging the Gap, which will provide information about the coverage gap or “doughnut hole” and techniques and tips on how to deal with it. The presenter will be from the SHINE (Serving Health Insurance Needs of Elders) Program, West Central Florida Area Agency on Aging Inc. For more information, call Debbie Caneen at (813) 892-2990.

Mind Boost! seminar is Sept. 30

The Sun City Area Chamber of Commerce, 1651 Sun City Plaza, will host a 90-minute workshop starting at 10 a.m. designed to increase area residents’ awareness of mind/brain health and to encourage them to take active steps to maintain brain wellness. The facilitator will be Edmond Dubreuil of The Community Wellness Center. All are welcome.

The cost for the workshop is $5 per person. Coalition members get in free. The program curriculum was developed by the South Shore Coalition on Mental Health and Aging, with monetary support from the Community Foundation of Tampa Bay and Sun Towers.
