Learn about, be prepared for, Medicare

If you’re turning 65 and getting ready to sign up for Medicare, being uninformed about your benefits and options can result in coverage delays, financial penalties and higher health care costs. Be prepared by speaking with a local Medicare counselor provided by the Florida Department of Elder Affairs Serving Health Insurance Needs of Elders program. SHINE offers free, confidential and unbiased Medicare counseling. For information, call the Florida Elder Helpline at (800) 963-5337 or visit www.floridashine.org.

Community cats need your help

Feline Folks has said goodbye to many of its loyal community cat feeders who headed North for the summer and is in need of volunteers to replace them. If you’re an animal lover and can help even one day a month, Feline Folks could use your assistance.

Volunteers feed feral cats daily. The most urgent need is for help on Saturdays and Sundays.

If you’d like to take a test ride to learn more about the process, call (813) 545-7611, email [email protected] or visit www.felinefolks.us. Food, training and support are provided.

Mission looks to community

Good Samaritan Mission is looking for some helping hands and generous hearts to help with its annual Back to School event in August. The goal is to have at least 500 backpacks filled with school supplies to give out to local children in need as they prepare to head back to school. In addition to the backpacks, the mission wants to connect its families with agencies and organizations that will serve as resources for them throughout the year.

If you’d like to financially support the outreach, send a check marked BTS in the memo field to Good Samaritan Mission, P.O. Box 213, Balm, FL 33503. Or if you’d like to volunteer at the event or are involved with an agency or organization that would like to participate, call (813) 634-7136.

SCC Interfaith Council provides support

The Interfaith Council of Sun City Center awarded a $10,000 grant to the Good Samaritan Mission for a new air conditioner, lawn mower, copier expenses and newsletter printing.

Cat food drive is under way

South Shore Felines is sponsoring a Feed the Tuna Chest cat food drive at Sam’s Club, 10385 Big Bend Road, Riverview Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The drive is 100-percent donation driven and made by local animal lovers. All donated bags and cans of cat food provide a temporary resource for struggling cat owners and caretakers in the community.
