SUN CITY CENTER – Mother Nature may not have cooperated with the recent SCC Relay for Life but that didn’t stop about 40 enthusiastic participants from having a good time. The small crowd of mostly cancer survivors escaped the rain by walking victory laps inside the SCC Area Chamber of Commerce, dancing, playing games and sharing their stories of courage.
Hud Richard of Kings Point sold $1 strings to walkers, who then received a bead for every lap they completed around the chamber’s banquet room. Richard donated the cash he collected.
South Bay Hospital donated a free barbecue lunch and DJ Gary the music. Included in the almost $5,000 raised before and during the event was a check for $2,275 presented by Ellen Kleinschmidt, president of the Performing Arts Club of Sun City Center. The money came from ticket sales, patron donations and sales of official Valentine’s diner coffee cups during the PAC’s recent run of the musical “Valentine’s on Route 66.”
The celebration of life ended with the Relay for Life’s traditional lighting of luminaries in remembrance of those who lost their lives to cancer.
