Contemporary music, familiar atmosphere mix at St. Andrew's

St. Andrew Presbyterian Church in Sun City Center has a growing contemporary service, thanks to its new worship leader Sam Green. Since his arrival, attendance has doubled. "Sam has added a spiritual breath of fresh air to the contemporary worship service," said The Rev. Mark E. Salmon. "Our church has always been a leader in this community for its traditional music. Sam has added another musical dimension to the total worship experience. Longtime members and visitors have found his talents refreshing." Originally from Richmond, Va., Green, 36, served as worship leader at Swift Creek Presbyterian Church in Moseley, Va., before moving to Florida two years ago with his wife and daughters. "I know that it is about God, and I am just his instrument," Green said. "When I am singing praises it is not a performance, but rather an opportunity to express feelings and thoughts to God in ways that can't be relayed with just words.
It is a conversation between you and God where you know that God hears you and he wants to bless you with his presence." While Green may lean town more contemporary music, he understands that older praise and worship songs bring a familiarity to St. Andrew's that some seek. "It is such a blessing to have all of the options that we have in the Christian community of churches," said Green. "You can find a place where you feel at home (whether) you are more drawn to the cutting-edge music of today or the wonderful hymns of more traditional worship services. "We provide a wonderful mix of all types of music," he continued. "We want to have a comfortable atmosphere where everyone is welcoming and you can come in and say, 'Hey, I know that song.'" St. Andrew's, 1239 Del Webb Blvd. W., holds its contemporary service at 11 a.m. on Sundays. For information visit www.standrewatscc.org or call (813) 634-1252.
