Bulls redshirt sophomore DB Craig Watts Jr., who practiced behind starting nickel back Ronnie Hoggins this past spring, has transferred to Division II Valdosta State, his father confirmed Monday.
Watts, deemed a four-star prospect by at least four major recruiting services out of Admiral Farragut, tweeted a photo Monday of himself in a black VSU shirt signing paperwork. USF also confirmed Watts has left the program.
By transferring from a Division I to a D-II program, Watts wouldn't be required to sit out a season.
Watts also had pondered leaving the program shortly after the 2017 season, but chose to remain. Last fall, he appeared in all 12 games, but made no starts and finished with only five tackles.
Though USF faces a glaring depth issue at safety, it has stockpiled quality young cornerbacks recently (i.e. Donelle Thomas, Bentlee Sanders) and could convert one to the nickel spot. The Bulls also bring in freshman safeties JaJuan Cherry and Keyon Helton this summer.
