BOCA RATON - Mounir Benzegala and Jeremy Black each made a pair of free throws in the final seconds of overtime Wednesday, helping the University of Tampa men's basketball team to a 79-74 win against Lynn.
Chris Evans led the Spartans (13-4, 6-2 Sunshine State Conference) with 18 points, while Rashad Callaway added a career-high 17 points against Lynn (11-7, 4-3).
UT returns to action Saturday at home against Rollins College at 4 p.m.
SAINT LEO 82, FLORIDA TECH 80: Dusty Driggs scored 14 points and led a Saint Leo comeback with an unlikely 4-point play. He also was 5-for-5 from the free-throw line as the Lions (9-9, 3-5 SSC) snapped a five-game home losing streak.
Florida Tech (14-4, 4-4) led by nine with 6:49 left, but the Lions pulled even on Driggs' 4-point play, fouled as he made a 3-pointer with 2:21 left. An Eric Sharper free throw made it 78-77 and a pair of Driggs free throws gave Saint Leo the lead for good.
Tampa Women Fall To Lynn In Final Minute
BOCA RATON - Liz Roth converted a pair of free throws with less than a minute to play, giving Lynn University's women's team a 54-53 victory against the University of Tampa in an SSC game.
The teams traded the lead for most of the game before the Spartans (14-4, 6-2) took a 53-52 lead on an Erica Woodard free throw. Lynn (15-4, 6-2) attempted a 3-pointer on their next possession and missed, but Roth grabbed the loose ball and was fouled. She converted both free throws.
The Spartans were led by Sheena Walton, who scored 15 points, had nine rebounds and blocked four shots.
SAINT LEO 78, FLORIDA TECH 62: Dominique Daniels had 17 points and eight rebounds as the Lions (9-10, 2-6 SSC) snapped a nine-game losing streak against the Panthers (10-9, 2-6).
Former Hillsborough High star Sabrina Schmitt and Amanda Holloway scored 12 points for the Lions.
