Rowdies keep Silverbacks winless with 3-2 victory
Forward Daniel Antoniuk scored two goals as The Tampa Bay Rowdies defeated the winless Atlanta Silverbacks 3-2 Saturday in Atlanta. Forward Mike Ambersley added a goal in the 79th minute that proved to be the game-winner as the Rowdies (3-2-3) won on the road for the first time this season. Atlanta fell to 0-4-4. The Rowdies jumped out to an early lead in the 12th minute as Antoniuk, who was named the NASL's offensive player of the week on Monday, scored for the second straight game on an assist by midfielder Shane Hill. Antoniuk extended Tampa Bay's lead in the 37th minute on an assist by midfielder Keith Savage.Antoniuk leads the Rowdies with four goals and 9 points this season despite starting just two games. He is tied for third in the NASL in goals and is tied for fifth in the league in points. The Rowdies took that 2-0 lead into halftime. Tampa Bay has not allowed a first-half goal all season. The Silverbacks got on the scoreboard in the 63rd minute, when Shane Moroney headed a cross from Raphael Cox past Tampa Bay goalkeeper Jeff Attinella, who also made five saves. Ambersley gave the Rowdies a 3-1 lead in the 79th minute with an unassisted goal, his second of the season. That proved crucial when Maroney added his second goal of the game in the 89th minute, heading home a corner kick from Ciaran O'Brien. The Rowdies begin U.S. Open Cup play at 7 p.m. Tuesday, when they travel to face Jacksonville United in a second-round game. With a victory, Tampa Bay would host Major League Soccer's Colorado Rapids at 7:30 p.m. May 29, at Al Lang Stadium in St. Petersburg. The Rowdies return to league action at 7:30 p.m. Friday, when they plays host to the defending NASL champion Minnesota Stars on Military Appreciation Night.
