Tampa Bay Rays close to signing Farnsworth, Scott
ST. PETERSBURG - The Tampa Bay Rays are turning to a pair of familiar faces to fill a pair of familiar needs. The team is close to signing relief pitcher Kyle Farnsworth and designated hitter Luke Scott, according to a source with knowledge of the situation. The deals should be announced early next week. Ken Rosenthal of Fox reported Farnsworth agreed to a one-year, $1.25 million contract that includes another $1.5 million in incentives. Farnsworth, a free agent after last season, made $3.3 million in 2012, when he missed the first 77 games while recovering from a right elbow strain suffered during spring training. Farnsworth suffered a similar injury in September 2011 that limited his availability. After saving 25 games for the Rays in 2011, Farnsworth was used in middle relief last season when he was 1-6 with a 4.00 ERA in 27 innings over 34 outings. He allowed five earned runs in his first six outings and six earned runs over his final 10. In between, Farnsworth allowed one earned run in 16 1/3 innings. Farnsworth, who turns 37 in April, said last season that he wanted to remain with the Rays and pitch close to his Celebration home. With Jake McGee expected to pitch deeper in games, Farnsworth will continue to serve as a middle reliever. The Rays declined the $6 million 2013 option on Scott and paid the $1 million buyout in November, sending the left-handed hitter into free agency. Rays executive vice president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman said at the time that he was interested in bringing Scott back, but did not want to limit his options during the offseason as he pursued upgrades for the offense. Scott, who said he wanted to return for 2013, was disappointed with his 2012 season. He entered spring training still recovering from shoulder surgery that ended his 2011 season in August. He hit 14 home runs for the Rays and drove in 55 runs in 314 at-bats while being limited to 96 games because of back and oblique injuries that twice sent him to the disabled list.
