Teammate of the day
The members of the rotation make it a habit of watching each other pitch, even if it means a minor-league game on a back field. But only one starter was there Monday morning to watch RHP Alex Cobb pitch a simulated game during the Rays’ lone off day of the spring, and that was LHP David Price.
RHP Chris Archer, LHP Matt Moore and RHP Jeremy Hellickson were nowhere to be found.
“Archer came last time, so he already has his bonus points,” Cobb said. “Helly, no excuse. Should have been here. Matt had to go move into his apartment in St. Pete, so the only one that’s slacking a little bit is Helly.”
RHP Brandon Gomes, whose chances of making the Opening Day roster could be hindered by the fact he has an option remaining, has pitched 5ª scoreless innings over five outings. He’s allowed one hit, walked one and struck out eight.
During the winter, Gomes watched video of himself pitching in 2009, when he felt he was at his best, and worked on his mechanics until he returned to that form. It’s hard to imagine the results could be any better.
It’s only spring, but ...
The Rays’ infield is hitting a combined .391 with seven doubles, four home runs and 19 RBIs. 2B Ben Zobrist is batting .438 followed by SS Yunel Escobar (.417), 1B James Loney (.409) and 3B Evan Longoria (.320).
Also, OF David DeJesus is hitting .556 with three doubles, and CF Desmond Jennings is batting .346 with five RBIs.
