Rays Triple Play: Notes from camp

Fortune favors the bald

Owner Stuart Sternberg, manager Joe Maddon and many of the Rays players, coaches and staff will shave their heads before today’s game against the visiting Red Sox to raise money and awareness for the Pediatric Cancer Foundation. Fortune Favors the Bald T-shirts are on sale for $15 at Charlotte Sports Park and the Rays team store in Tampa with the proceeds going to the PCF.

One name not on the sign-up sheet is RF Wil Myers.

What’s in a T-shirt?

3B Evan Longoria had black T-shirts made for his teammates with the saying “If you hear any noise it’s just me and the boys boppin” printed on the front.

“I don’t know what it means, but it’s a comfortable shirt,” RHP Alex Cobb said.

Batter’s eye passes muster

Longoria, 1B James Loney and OF David DeJesus gave the new batter’s eye at Tropicana Field a thumbs-up after taking batting practice Friday at the Trop.

“It’s a little bit different than what we’re used to, but I love the concept,” Longoria said of the walkway that stretches across the outfield and led to the new design in center field. “I think it’s going to make the stadium much more accessible to the fans. The actual hitting area, I think, is going to be perfect.”
