The Tampa Bay Rays signed infielder Jayson Nix on Thursday to a minor league deal with an invite to spring training.
If he makes the team, Nix could fill the role vacated by Kelly Johnson, who signed this offseason with the New York Yankees,
A six-year veteran, Nix spent the past two seasons with the Yankees, where he played second base, third base, shortstop and left field. He was also used as the DH.
The right-hand hitting Nix has a career .218 batting average with a .290 on-base percentage. He batted .239 in 444 at-bats during his two seasons with the Yankees.
The Rays also announced that outfielder Jerry Sands cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple A Durham. Sands also received an invite to spring training.
