Rays sign Fontenot, five others to minor league deals
ST. PETERSBURG - Infielder Mike Fontenot, who has played parts of seven major league seasons with three teams, was among six players signed Thursday by the Tampa Bay Rays to minor league contracts with invitees to spring training. Fontenot, 32, who played with the Chicago Cubs, San Francisco Giants and Philadelphia Phillies, will compete for a job on the Opening Day roster. A career .265 hitter, Fontenot batted .289 in 47 games in 2012 with the Phillies. Also signed were outfielder Rich Thompson, who played 23 games last season for the Rays, right-handed pitchers Matt Buschmann and Will Inman, infielder Shawn O'Malley and first baseman Nick Weglarz. The Rays have until 11:59 p.m. Friday to tender contracts to their nine arbitration-eligible players: David Price, Jeff Niemann, Burke Badenhop, Matt Joyce, Sean Rodriguez, Reid Brignac, Sam Fuld, Ryan Roberts and Ben Francisco.
