PORT CHARLOTTE – The Tampa Bay Rays hit the practice fields Thursday morning for the first full-squad workout of the spring.
Special Assistant Don Zimmer, back for his 66th year in pro baseball, joined the gathering on Field 4 as manager Joe Maddon addressed the players and coaches before the team split up into groups for their workouts.
The biggest news of the day so far is right fielder Wil Myers got a hair cut earlier this week.
The Rays have 64 players in camp, though three have yet to arrive from the Dominican Republic because of visa issues – pitchers Juan Carlos Oviedo and Juan Sandoval and infielder Wilson Betemit.
Shortstop Yunel Escobar made his first appearance in the clubhouse before this morning's workout.
The Rays open the Grapefruit League schedule Feb. 28 against Baltimore at Charlotte Sports Park.
