BOSTON -- The Rays placed right fielder Wil Myers on the 15-day disabled list Sunday morning with a sprained right wrist and called up outfielder Jerry Sands from Triple A Durham.
Myers returned to Tampa Bay on Sunday morning and will have his wrist examined Monday by team orthopedic surgeon Dr. Koco Eaton.
Myers injured the wrist Friday when he collided with center fielder Desmond Jennings while chasing a line drive hit into the right-center field gap by Boston catcher A.J. Pierzynski. Neither player caught the ball and it became the game-winning hit.
Rays manager Joe Maddon said he doesn’t expected Myers to be out for an extended period.
Myers is the third Rays player to go on the DL during this road trip. Outfielder Brandon Guyer was placed on the DL last Monday with a fractured left thumb. Catcher Ryan Hanigan went on the DL on Wednesday with a right hamstring injury.
Rookie Kevin Kiermaier will start Sunday in right field against the Red Sox.
To make room on the 40-man roster for Sands, infielder Tim Beckham (knee surgery) was moved to the 60-day DL.
Sands arrived at Fenway Park less than two hours before game time and will serve as the Rays designated hitter in the series finale against the Red Sox.
