ST. PETERSBURG – The Rays have brought up three players today ahead of Monday, when rosters are allowed to expand to 40 during the month of September.
RHP Brandon Gomes (Triple A Durham) and C Curt Casali (Class A Charlotte) will be recalled Monday as expected. RHP Steve Geltz will have his contract purchased from Durham and will be added to the 40-man roster.
The Rays will also activate OF David DeJesus, who has been out since June 19 with a left hand fracture.
Casali and DeJesus joined the team this morning. Gomes and Geltz are expected to arrive this afternoon.
As for today’s game, Alex Cobb will face Clay Buchholz in the third game of this four-game series that ends Monday afternoon. The teams split the first two games.
CF Desmond Jennings is not in the lineup. Rays manager Joe Maddon said after Saturday’s win that Jennings might need another day off because of a bruised left knee.
UTL Ben Zobrist is not the lineup. Maddon said Saturday he was looking to get Zobrist a day off.
Struggling DH Wil Myers, who has six hits in his 42 at-bats since returning from the disabled list, also has the day off.
Red Sox 2B Dustin Pedroia, who left Saturday’s game in the second inning with concussion-like symptoms is not in the lineup. Pedroia was struck on the side of his head by Logan Forsythe’s forearm while Pedroia tried to tag Forsythe as Forsythe slid head first into second base.
