Rays acquire catcher Shoppach from Indians

ST. PETERSBURG - The Rays acquired Kelly Shoppach on Tuesday from the Cleveland Indians for a player to be named later. The 29-year-old catcher hit .214 last season with 12 home runs in 271 at-bats. In 2008, he led all American League catchers with 21 home runs. "We've admired Kelly from afar for a while now,'' Rays Executive President Andrew Friedman said. ''He's coming off a disappointing '09 season, but we feel like he has all the ability to be a much better player than that." The right-handed batter is a career .295 hitter against left-handed pitchers. He has been added to the 40-man roster, so the Rays will make a corresponding move today to get back to 40 players.
"As far as opportunity, I'm very excited,'' Shoppach said. "I've heard nothing but good things about the staff and the front office down there, some of the players. Obviously, it's an opportunity for me to compete now, which is better than the rebuilding process that Cleveland was going to do. That's what I want to do. "I want to help the team win. I think the opportunity to do that in Tampa is a nice one, especially with some of the young talent that's around there." Shoppach earned $1.95 million this past season. He is eligible for arbitration.
