WESLEY CHAPEL — The win took seven years to notch. For the first time in school history, Wiregrass Ranch beat its crosstown rival in the “War on 54.”
“More than anything, this is for the seniors,” first-year Wiregrass coach Mike Lawrence said. “It’s a good win for the program, but it’s also good to send those guys, who have had lots of downs in their careers, out on top.”
Wiregrass, coming off consecutive 0-10 seasons, finished 4-6 under Lawrence, but the Wildcats, in their first year under coach Tico Hernandez went 0-10.
On Friday, Wesley Chapel took a first-quarter lead after a 60-yard screen pass from Scotty Edwards to Eric Bennett.
But Wiregrass tied it on the ensuing kickoff when Devin Duckett returned it 97 yards. The Bulls widened their lead to 16-7 after quarterback Shane Bucenell, who threw for a 110 yards, hit James Jackson on a 60-yard slant for a touchdown.
With the game tied at 21 in the fourth quarter, the Bulls went ahead for good on a 4-yard run by Elias Galvan.
