HUDSON — Coming into the Kickoff Classic against Wesley Chapel, Fivay head coach Chris Taylor knew he was breaking in some young players on both sides of the ball.
On the other sideline, Wesley Chapel first-year coach Tico Hernandez is also saddled with a young, inexperienced roster. After a penalty and turnover-plagued game at Fivay, both coaches know there is a lot of work to do before next week’s season opener.
Fivay controlled the line of scrimmage early in the game, and midway through the first quarter, Davion Sutton got the Falcons on the board with a 1-yard touchdown run. Sutton finished with 55 yards on 13 carries, all in the first half.
After the touchdown drive, the Falcons bogged down on offense, but their defense tightened up. They held Wesley Chapel to 17 total yards of offense in the first half, taking their 6-0 lead into the locker room.
Wesley Chapel’s Jase Williams gave the Wildcats a spark in the third quarter, tying the game with a 2-yard touchdown run. The JV teams played the final quarter, with Wesley Chapel scoring two touchdowns for the final margin of victory.
Fivay opens the season at Ridgewood next week, while Wesley Chapel plays host to Zephyrhills.
