Wednesday’s Prep news and notes

Newsome High junior defensive lineman Jordan Harris was released Monday night from Tampa General Hospital, hours after being flown via helicopter from the school’s football practice field following a scary collision with a teammate.

Paul Lindstrom, Newsome’s athletic director, said Harris could not feel his lower extremities following the collision. Lindstrom said a CT scan and MRI were negative, but Harris did sustain a concussion.

Newsome hosts Wharton in a key district game Friday.

Strawberry Crest junior quarterback Tristan Hyde will miss the rest of the season with a torn ACL. Hyde suffered the injury during a Sept. 13 away game at Tallahassee Leon.

Hyde completed 45 of 87 passes for 567 yards and six touchdowns in three games. Junior Austin Carswell has since become the starter.

Brandon 6-foot-8 senior forward Roderick Davis verbally committed to Wright State, Eagles coach J.J. Turner said.

Davis led the Eagles with 13.2 points, 8.9 rebounds and 2.4 blocks per game last season en route to a 18-9 record.
