Upsets dot Friday night's prep football playoffs

The second round of the high school football playoffs Friday proved to be a night of upsets as a defending state champion was defeated and two runner-ups got revenge on district champs. Plant, the 2011 Class 8A state champion, lost at Orlando Dr. Phillips, 24-7, to finish the season 10-2. In Class 7A, Newsome avenged an earlier loss to Durant with a 21-14 victory. The loss was Durant's first of the season as the Cougars finished 11-1. Newsome will play at Kissimmee Osceola in the region finals next Friday After losing to Hillsborough 3-0 earlier in the season (and the Class 6A-District 8 title in the process), Armwood defeated the Terriers, 9-7. The Hawks advance to play at Gainesville.
One team avoiding upset was Robinson. The Knights trailed Lakewood by five points when Zain Gilmore connected with Martin Ruiz on a 4-yard touchdown pass to lift Robinson to a 22-19 victory. Robinson will host Pasco next Friday. In addition to Plant, Durant and Hillsborough, Tampa Catholic and Carrollwood Day also had their seasons end. Clearwater Central Catholic kicked a field goal in the final minute of the game to stop TC, 10-7. Carrollwood Day was unable to stop Naples First Baptist in a 56-28 loss.
